The Ryder Cup Matches are a prestigious golf tournament that were originally played between the USA and Great Britain but in 1979 was expanded to include golfers from the rest of Europe. The cup is named after Samuel Ryder, an English seed merchant who was friends with one of the British team members of an earlier unofficial tournament in 1926. He agreed to commission the design of a golden chalice style cup as a trophy for the following years inaugural competition.
