Tuesday | London Bridge Pub |
Weekly 8:00pm | Wharf 2, Monterey, California, 93944 |
Monterey | This quiz night is done in six sections of ten questions, with some questions being worth more than one point. Entry fee is $1 per person, with no limit on the number of people on one team. First prize is the money, second prize is a $25 gift certificate to the London Bridge, and third prize is a free round of drinks. Most subjects are covered, from general knowledge to sports to pop culture, including some local geogrpahy (e.g. street names), as well as some truly obscure trivia. Papers are traded and graded after each section of ten, and after the final round, the sheets are all given to the quizmaster to determine a winner. Ties are broken with extra questions.
There is an extra wrinkle to this game, in the form of a "drink question." One question, usually in the fourth round, is designated the "drink question," and every team which answers it correctly receives a free round of drinks. As the London Bridge is not very large, it is advisable for people to arrive anywhere from 30-60 minutes prior to start time. |

Thursday | All-Star Pop Culture |
Weekly 7:00 p.m. | Jillian's Billiards, 101 4th Street, Suite 170, San Francisco, 94103 |
San Francisco | Sure, you may have played in other Pub Quiz night's around town. You may even frequent your favorite pub every week. Or maybe you've never played a trivia night, but love the World Series of Pop Culture? We feel it's about time someone stepped up and brought the whole thing to the next level! We are pleased to announce the league that everyone has been waiting for.... Ph.D.'s NOT required!
With the addition of a 'league format' to the ever-popular Pub Quiz, teams answer questions to score points, not just for the night, but over a season of weekly events. After 11 weeks of pop culture fun, we take the top 4 teams in standings (2 from each Division) and play a twelveth week of post-season fun, that will play host to the Championship, where we will declare the winning team the undisputed ALL-STAR POP CULTURE CHAMPIONS.
You won't find categories like "geography", or "Nobel Prize winners" or "Scientific Formulas of the 1860's" anywhere near our quiz! Instead, all categories will be drawn from 5 genres: Television, Movies, Music, Personalities, and Ephemera (yeah, we had to look that one up too). In addition, you also won't find a boring list of questions that make you feel like you're back in Miss Jenkins' 2nd grade classroom. Instead, we've designed a multimedia show that will feature audio, graphic, and video questions. We even have a "Final Jeopardy-like" bonus round every week where you get to determine the value of the correctly answered question!
All-Star Pop Culture... bringing the pub quiz to a whole new LEAGUE! |

Thursday | Britannia Arms |
Weekly 8:00 p.m. | 444 Alvarado Street, Monterey, California, 93944 |
Monterey | Sometimes there is an entry fee of $1 per person, with the winning team receiving all the money. Other times there is no entry fee, and the winners receive prizes. The quiz is 31 questions, covering all sorts of knowledge: general, sport, and pop culture are all included. There are audio clues as well, such as foreign national anthems, odd sounds, identifying actors' voices, obscure television themes, etc. Some of the questions are multiple choice, but most are not. One of the questions is used as a tiebreaker, and it is always a "guess-the-figure" question, like "Within x feet, how long is a football pitch?" If your guess is within range, you get the point for the question, but in case of
a tie, the closest answer on that question wins. One of the questions involves identifying clips of three television themes, and two points are awarded for getting all three, one point for getting two of them, and no points for one or none, so there are 32 points possible. There is a halftime break after #14, usually 15-30 minutes, and then a sheet is distributed with the middle questions (#15-#21 usually) on it. These questions are usually identifying pictures of famous people and movies, as well as guessing a famous person from a description/minibio, a math or word puzzle, and sometimes identifying a country based on its shape. |

Saturday | Lulu's Kitchen @ Albums Bistro |
One off event 11am | 112413th St. "On the Hill", Boulder, Boulder, 80302 |
Boulder | Saturday April 14 2007. Who's better at trivia? The British? The Americans? The Canadians? We'll find out on Saturday April 14 2007 when top game show contestants and everyday people from around the world compete simultaneously in the first-ever Transatlantic Quiz. The two-hour written quiz taken by individuals will cover a mixture of pop culture and academic trivia. The event will match the most famous trivia player in the USA, Jeopardy mega-champ Ken Jennings, against the greatest player in Europe, World Quizzing Champion Kevin Ashman. "These two titans will be going head to head for the very first time," says co-organizer Paul Bailey. "It'll be very interesting to see how our best does against their best."
The general public is invited to take part in the two-hour written test that will cover pop culture and academic trivia in the areas of culture, entertainment, history, lifestyle, media, sport, science, and world topics. Event sites and times can be found via links at www.transatlanticquiz.com – note that the test will be given live in the various locations and not on the web. Current venues include London, New York, Ottawa, Chicago, Jacksonville, Madison, and Boulder, with others being added in the weeks leading up to the test. The questions for the quiz have been balanced between the three competing countries and developed from the USA by Ray Hamel, reference librarian and crossword puzzle constructor, NY Times Trivia Master, and Quiz writer for
"Pages" magazine. Questions from Canada have been developed by Paul Paquet, trivia writer through Triviahalloffame.com for clients such as Microsoft Encarta and MTV Europe, head writer for World Trivia Night, and a writer for merchandising of “1v100” and “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”. The questions from the UK have been developed by Chris Jones, former civil servant and winner on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” who now works full-time for Quizzing.co.uk. The Transatlantic Quiz will also prepare players for the World Quizzing Championships, which take place June 2, 2007. |

New York | Free entry. Four rounds with 10 questions each. Top three winning teams get beers, best team name wins a round of shots. Free shots for answering special between-round "shot questions". Every Tuesday night at 8:30. Usually starts on time, so show up at 8 to get a drink and settle in, or show up before 8 for happy hour. It's hosted by different people each week (anyone can sign up). People sign up a few weeks before they host, so they have time to prepare good questions. Difficulty ranges from easy to very difficult, depending on the host, but usually it's medium difficulty. One of the bartenders (Rich) is a trivia buff himself, and between rounds
he asks "shot questions" that people shout out the answers to. For each shot question, the first person to shout out the correct answer gets a free shot. The bar, Black & White, is just a few blocks from Union Square. It is slightly below ground so look for a low canopy with about 3 steps going down at the entry-way. |

Thursday | All-Star Pop Culture |
Weekly 7:00 p.m. | 731 Westlake Avenue N, Seattle, 98109 |
Seattle | Sure, you may have played in other Pub Quiz night's around town.
